February's Books Plus: Their Eyes Were Watching God
As cold winter winds swirl around us, join us at the library on Feb. 6th where we'll travel to sunny Florida to explore Zora Neale Hurston's evocative world. Alice Walker remarked that "no book was more important to her" than Their Eyes Were Watching God. As always we'll offer hot drinks, Amal's delicious cake, and an outlet for your stimulating conversation. Hope to see you here.

FEB. 6--Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Discussion Leader: Sarah Bowman
"This is Zora Hurston's third novel, again about her own people--and it is beautiful. It is about Negroes, and a good deal of it is written in dialect, but really it is about everyone, or least everyone who isn't so civilized that he has lost the capacity for glory. Indeed, from the first to last this is a well nigh perfect story--a little sententious at the start, but the rest is simple and beautiful and shining with humor."
--New York Times Book Review (September, 1937)
MARCH 6--Let the Great World Spin by Colm McCann - 2011 One Book One Bloomington Community Read!
Discussion Leader: Wendy Rubin
“In McCann’s wise and elegiac novel of origins and consequences, each of his finely drawn, unexpectedly connected characters balances above an abyss, evincing great courage with every step.”--Booklist
APRIL 3--Framing the Silence: The Myriad Forms of Poetry
Discussion Leader: Dory Lynch
“Poetry is thoughts that breathe, and words that burn.” ~Thomas Gray
It’s National Poetry Month. We’ll celebrate poetry in various forms including haiku, villanelles, sonnets, and sestinas. Please bring a poem or two that you really enjoy. Reading poetry out loud is the best way to experience poetry.
MAY 1--The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Discussion Leader: Elizabeth Gray
“All modern literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. It is the best book we’ve had.” ~Ernest Hemingway
