Parent/Teacher Resource Room

Located in a room just off the Children's Department, the Parent/Teacher Resource Room (PTRR) holds materials relating to parenting and teaching young children.

Though the emphasis is on early childhood, people working with school age children can find books about children's literature, hands-on projects, and curriculum support for science, reading, math, etc. Check here for materials to help children learn to read, help children in school, get ideas for activities to do with children, including: crafts, games, fingerplays, songs, cooking, planning birthday parties, and traveling. The PTRR also includes books of interest to educators, such as literature connections and literacy activities, homeschooling, storytelling, and circle time scripts. Books in "Big Book" format are also available to check-out - ideal for sharing with a group.

The PTRR maintains a core collection of general parenting books, though the great majority of these titles will be available for circulation through the adult department. The PTPR features select titles available for those considering one for purchase and to provide a place to research a variety of responses from leading experts to a given situation (such as potty training).

You'll find much more information on parenting and teaching children in the adult non-fiction collection. As well as housing some of the same titles and areas found in the PTRR, the adult collection includes many topics not found in the PTRR, such as general child development and psychology, pregnancy and childbirth, general health and first aid, discipline, and starting a daycare.

In addition to books, you'll find parenting magazines covering a variety of aspects of parenting and instructing children. Local information about community organizations providing services and activities for parents and children are also found in the PTRR. The PTRR even provides a quiet atmosphere for nursing mothers - rocking chair included!

As always, librarians are pleased to help answer questions and provide guidance.
