In 2009 Monroe County Public Library teamed up with the Monroe County History Center for their first digitization grant. Indiana Bedrock project was designed to research, catalog and digitize photographs, letters, newspaper clippings, business records and documents relating to the Matthews Brothers Stone Company, an Ellettsville limestone quarry in operation from 1862 to 1978.

The project uncovered other company archives to further explore the development of the Indiana limestone industry across the 19th and 20th centuries.

Whether through the eyes of stone cutters and quarry workers or through the lens of traditional or modern technologies, this digital collection offer a view of their unique part of Indiana history and culture.

This project is part of the Indiana Memory Digital Library and is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Indiana State Library.
