ForBloomington Republican the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Monroe County Public Library and the Monroe County History Center, together with the IU Lilly Library and the Wylie House Museum, created At War and At Home: Monroe County Timeline 1855 - 1875.

This digital collection examines how Bloomington and Monroe County were affected by the events before, during, and after the Civil War. For example:

  • At war: Soldier Milton M. Nichols fought temporary blindness, homesickness, and harsh military camp conditions, as well as rebel soldiers.
  • At home: Teachers D.E. Hunter and Margaret McCalla worked to establish more structured, graded schools while others fought for a safer, more secure jail
