MCPL Sights and Sounds

Nurse jackie, Season 1.

I'm in the middle of season one of Nurse Jackie. This is a television show about the day-to-day life of Jackie Peyton who is a nurse in New York's All Saints' Hospital. This television show is half drama and half comedy. I don't recognize any of the actors except for Eli Wallach (Wall Street) but they are very convincing in their roles. There's quite a bit of blood and visual depictions of traumatic incidents that may bother some viewers but if you can handle that then you'll enjoy it. What keeps me hooked on the show is trying to understand Peyton's character. She's a complex union of opposite characteristics. She's happily married but having an affair. She counsels on addiction but is addicted to codeine. She's nice and shows exemplary compassion towards her patients except for the ones she hates. She's definitely a complex person. Read more »

That is the question I asked myself when I looked at this week's top ten downloads from Freegal. Freegal posts the top ten most downloaded songs on its website. These are the songs that our library patrons want the most. This week's top download is "Mama' s Broken Heart" by Miranda Lambert.

Desk Set

Image

It's hard to top a film team of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Although lovers in real life, their films have a chemistry that is almost electrifying. Desk Set is one of their best. Adam's Rib comes in at a very close second place, but to me Desk Set is their perfect film.

Supervolcano

Image
Do you know where the largest "active" super volcano is located in the continental United States? It might surprise you to know it is located in Yellowstone National Park. If you walk around the park you might not notice it though you would be aware of its presence all around you seen in the hot springs and mud pits throughout the park. So why would you not notice it? It's so big that you simply cannot see it. The Yellowstone super volcano is so large that its caldera can only be seen from space. Yellowstone National Park is not just the location of the volcano, it is the volcano, and if it erupts we will say good-bye to the earth as we know it. Read more »

Nature: A Murder of Crows

You can always count on the PBS Nature series to be interesting and have beautiful videography. But I was especially captivated when I recently watched A Murder of Crows. It didn't sound that interesting- a documentary about crows, but when I read the description of crows as "apes with feathers" I was intrigued. I had no idea how intellligent these birds are.
