Bloomington, IND—Each fall, the public is invited to nominate titles for One Book One Bloomington and Beyond, and then to make their selection from a short list of finalists. This year’s winner is Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay (2000). The novel was published to "nearly unanimous praise" and became a New York Times best seller. In 2001, it received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Five public discussions of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay are scheduled from February through April at venues around the community. Local book clubs are encouraged to read and discuss the novel. Starting March 24, Monroe County Public Library will present a free film series, “Great Escapism,” four consecutive Wednesdays nights. Each film spotlights a theme in the book, from the plight of European Jews during WWII to Houdini and Superman. A calendar of events and resources can be found on the One Book website.
As One Book Committee members announce this year’s selection countywide at televised meetings of the City Council, County Council, and MCCSC and MCPL Boards, they are handing out copies of the book to Council and Board members, who are encouraged to read the book and pass it on for someone else to read. Monroe County Public Library has multiple print copies in its collection as well audiobook and downloadable audiobook versions, and copies are available through local book sellers.
One Book, One Bloomington and Beyond is a partnership of the Bloomington Area Arts Council, City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation, Indiana University Libraries, Monroe County Public Library, and Monroe County Community School Corporation. Through the discussion of a single book and the issues therein, the One Book initiative seeks to encourage literary reading and to build community by encouraging conversation and the sharing of ideas by members of the community.
