Bloomington, Ind.—Monroe County Public Library patrons and community residents are invited to attend a public presentation on the renovation plans for the Main Library by architect Christine Matheu. The public can view drawings of the proposed changes to update library spaces for new and better services and can ask questions and leave comments.

The two public presentations will occur at:

• 5:45 p.m., Wednesday, September 11
Meeting Room 1B, first floor, Main Library

• 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 12
Library Auditorium, first floor, Main Library

Residents may also view and comment on the renovation plans on the library’s website (mcpl.info) or in the Main Library atrium between 12 noon, Thursday, September 12 and 9 p.m., Tuesday, September 17.

“Focus groups and comments from the public and our staff have driven the plans and designs for the renovation,” says library director Sara Laughlin. “We are excited about the draft plans and look forward to hearing from the public.”

The renovation project will create a space for teens; a digital creativity lab for all ages; improve lighting, sound, and safety issues in the library auditorium; create more public meeting spaces; relocate the movies and music collections and Community Outreach offices, and create a more visible entrance and efficient space for the Friends of the Library Bookstore.

The Main Library on Kirkwood was built in 1997. It was expanded and renovated in 1997. Since then, annual circulation has increased from just over a million to over 2.7 million per year. This current renovation is the third phase of the renovation that began in 2009.
