Grey Gardens

Albert Maysles, David Maysles & Ellen Hovde, and Muffie Meyer
Adult Audiovisual DVD - 920 Gre

Mother Edith Beale and daughter Edith Beale; 'Big Edie' and 'Little Edie', relatives of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, live as recluses in a run-down mansion in the wealthy Hamptons area of New York. The film follows their day-to-day activities as they live among the squalor. The 'direct cinema' approach used by the Maysles allowed for the women to tell their own stories and shape the direction of the film. The Maysles' earlier film Salesman, about door-to-door Bible salesman, is perhaps as equally/more compelling.
